    Tarp Suspension

I'm finishing up my maccat 12x10 DIY clone and am getting to the point of deciding on what I want to use as suspension. I am fairly weight conscious.

full ridge line on top or under the tarp? or should I just run lines from the tieouts to the trees? ridgeline tensioning with prussics or something I dont have to worry about slipping like figure9's? Type of line I should use for ridgeline?

Any suggestions on base tie-outs? I'd like to find something lightweight and dayglo orange with some elasticity.

    Recommendations for stakes?

What are the perks of your setups?

Its personal preference on a CRL or seperate lines from each end of the tarp. CRL over or under are personal preference as well. For attachment Dutch makes some great bits of titanium hardware that are lighter than a Figure 9, or you could just tie knots.

If you want orange lines then there are a few options:

For stakes its hard to beat the MSR Ground hogs (reg or mini). If you want to go serious gram weenie use trail sticks or rocks for you corner tie outs.

I've been a zing-it fan from the start because I got the splicing bug. But there are other equally excellent choices.

I've been going back and forth with CRL and 2 piece, I give the CRL the edge for setting up wind and or rain, otherwise it's just a toss up.

I've simplified my ridgelines and guylines down hardware wise to the point that the only gizmos I'm using are Dutch hooks and pursiks.

I also like the MSR Grounhogs but they're kinda heavy (@ 15g/ea) so I only carry 2, the rest are my home made cut down alum. gutter spikes which weigh about half that which compares well with the ti stake offerings but are much larger diameter and I think give good hold in soft soil.

Have fun with it, it can be quite challenging and it's not expensive.

I appreciate all the input. Thanks! I think that Im going to play around with the ridge line once I've got cord. Those Dutch TarpFlys look really cool and I think I'll use them whether I go CRL or just tie off from the tie-outs.

I was able to pick up some of those Ti stakes, man are those going quick! The glowire was gone

I used to do tie-outs and Figure 9s from each end. I switched to a CRL and haven't looked back. So much easier to adjust. I use 1.75 Lash It with a fixed loop on one end that holds a Dutch hook. The other end is run through a Tarp Flyz and backspliced. I have three continuous loops in klemheist knots. One is used to connect the hook to after going around the tree. The other two connect to the tarp ends either with #1 Figure 9 s-biners or soft shackles.

I use carbon fiber stakes for the other tie-outs and put loop knots in the line so I don't require any additional hardware.

Are tie out really that much more work to adjust? Is there a significant weight saving vs a CRL?

If you run the ridgeline under a silnylon tarp do you have to worry about the line rubbing against the tarp and affecting the seam sealing?

    Thanks guys

I use 1.75mm Zing-it for all my tarp lines because:
    1. It's more than strong enough.
    2. It's yellow but not reflective - keeps me from tripping without being a lighthouse.
    3. Spliceable.
    4. I use it for everything including hammock ridgeline & stuff sack cord.
    5. Doesn't tangle.
    6. I buy the 180' spool.

I have 9' of it on each end of my tarp attached with Klemheist loops and a Dutch hook on the tree ends. I wrap the cord around each tree and hook it onto itself. Then I slide the tarp into place using the Klemheist loops.
