One of these "sling rings" (sold here as "aluminum suspension rings") would do.

Of course, cutting a ring to save maybe 10 grams by using 1 instead of 2 is something only a gram-weenie would do.
The half ring is how I arrived at the S-bar idea; I was thinking if you had half a ring it could work but could also slip out of place when not loaded. A ring is probably also stronger than an S or a half ring at resisting being twisted out of shape because its ends meet across from where the cord wraps, reinforcing it, so you could probably get away with a ring made of thinner stock than you could with another shape.

And yes, at a certain point, it becomes design for design's sake

Why not just a cheap steel "D" ring? Or are you going for weight now?

Cheap steel ring seems to work just fine, tried it yesterday.

But c'mon, where is the tinker factor in that????

Point taken. I know you and your tinkering.

As the Tinker from Fractured Fairy Tales called out his trade, "I tink! I tink!"

I just can't seem to find this item in the "worth it?" aisle...

We're down to a single 11g descending ring and still trying to find ways to make it lighter? Stop the insanity! LOL

I'm no ultralighter (not even remotely close), just doing messing around with the concept
That said, some people do cut the excess straps from their packs...

    6 grams

sorry Knotty, I can't help myself.

A stainless steel #2 grommet, in 3 layers of 1" polyester tree strapping.

I did hang for 20 minutes with this. No slippage and no evidence of the grommet deforming.

I tried a #1 grommet but the diameter is too small to keep the cord loops together.

Might be worth trying a washer with similar ID as the grommet.

You kill me Grizz. Sad thing is I can't help but think of alternatives myself. My goal is to spread out some of the compression loads on the Amsteel, which as we know performs poorly in that mode.

    Help the lesser mind please

This 'ring whoopie' does actually replace a whoopie as we know them and just a line of amsteel from gathered end to tree hugger and then to the magical ring is all that is required---correct?
Now the adjustment; I assume it is just as fast as a whoopie right? Just take off the weight and the coils around the amsteel line instantly loosen.
My percieved advantage- in the past and most recently I've replaced whoopies that were showing signs of wear where the whoopie begins. Aside from compression (potential) damage to the amsteel the degradation of the whoopie at point of entry is removed---correct?

And as always a vid showing close up is always helpful for the visual learner ME

WOW Grizz, that's awesome. I wonder about a # 1 grommet and Zing-it for a tarp suspension? Gonna try it soon as I get some grommets.
