But I'm just wondering but really seems like one wouldn't need a good descender would you? All you're relying on the ring to do is hold the amsteel, not the weight. Couldn't you do this with any old cheap ring?
Yeah, looks like you could do this with just a cheap carabiner, it doesn't look to be under any real load.
    Good luck,

BTW Bonepile that's very clever for someone from Mt Pilot.

(I'm kidding... as a NC native....)
Thats funny hppyfngy. No it's easy to adjust the length if you release the tension, just like on the Sliding Ring Suspension in Grizzlies video. I agree, a cheap steel ring from the hardware store might work, but they are smoother than descender rings so maybe not. Easy enough to give it a try.

I played around with this method a little last nite in the shop. Seems to work great but it looks as if there is pretty substantial crushing force placed on the Amsteel between the Amsteel loops and the metal ring. Maybe this is no more force than what a knot would do however in a knot the force would be Amsteel against Amsteel. I wonder if the force of Amsteel against the metal ring could actually shear off the Amsteel.
Does anyone think this could be a problem?

Here's an idea I just had: What about using this for a SLS suspension with one ring on each end, and hang your hammock off the ring? Would give fairly easy ridge line adjustment, along with the whoopie-style loop adjustment. Instead of the tail w/ whoopie hook, that would be the ridge line.

A quick solution to this could be to put a sheath on your amsteel to increase bend radius, and help prevent some abrasion against the ring. I don't think the compressive force will be much different than a knot, like an alpine butterfly.

Paracord nylon sheathing works very well, and you can use the inner core strands to whip it in place.

I thought about that as I was looking at it as well. My thought was that it would likely not be a big deal since the line is not being crushed between two hard surfaces like two rings. I know Grizz had his suspension tutorial videos where he warned against the Garda Hitch for that reason, but I wouldn't imagine this would have the same issue. I am not that experienced in a lot of experimentation with Amsteel, so I could be wrong, but I am willing to try hanging from this setup. I did 5 wraps to be on the safe side since I am much heavier than Bonepile!

    This is very cool.

The Grizz sliding descender ring suspension is one of my favorite suspension systems.

This is quite a nice variation eliminating the need for any ability to tie any knots at all.

This method looks like it would give a lot of adjustability - the ring can be moved along the line as well as the ability to adjust the length of the 'tail' passing under the loops in the ring.
As far as compressing the amsteel against the ring - I'm thinking that the force (and wear) will not always be in the same place because of the likelyhood that the ring and amsteel will not likely be in the exact same position each time you use it.
I was never a big fan of whoopie slings but I like the light weight and small size of Amsteel so I will be giving this method a try.

REI, Northlake or Pineville, I saw some in the Pineville store last weekend.
