    24 ft Hugger Barely Enough

    Thought I would include these pictures from a recent trip to the Three Sisters Wilderness here in Oregon. Just for fun I thought I would see what it would take to hang from one of the old growth Douglas Firs. As you can see in the first picture I could only get around this big fellow when I tied both of my 12 ft straps together. That kind of left me without anything to tie to the other tree. I moved on through the woods (picture 2) and got to this "smaller" tree which was a few inches too big for one of my straps. I decided to give up. I did find some smaller trees (only 6 feet around) further up the trail. Oh! The problems we have to deal with here in the Northwest.

    I just set one end down on the ground a started trekking around the tree letting out strap as I went. When I got around the tree, a few minutes later, I picked up the end off the ground and sort of shimmied it up the tree.

    Correction- now a Donating Member. - I've been lurking long enough, time to pony up. Thanks for a great site.

    Hmm- I'm a little worried about this Matrix thing. Does that have anything to do with math?

    I was guessing you held the first end in place with chewing gum while you went on a day hike to get the second end in place.

    In the southeast most of the big trees were logged, but there are a few pockets of 6ish foot diameter trees. Joyce Kilmer is one such location in NC. They have a 2 or 3 mile figure 8 trail that passes a dozen or so of big populars and hemlocks. Sometimes you see families posing for photos with many members at arms length as they reach around one of the big trees.

    I have always wanted to hike in the JK, and might soon. But I wondered what the trees would be like size/hanging wise.

    I would also like to make it to Joyce Kilmer in the next year. I've heard good things about it.
    Trees (1913)

    I THINK that I shall never see
    A poem lovely as a tree.

    A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
    Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

    A tree that looks at God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

    A tree that may in summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;

    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.

    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.

    -Joyce Kilmer (1913)
