    No-quilt cover system ???

The Claytor Expedition is on Santa’s sleigh for sure
I already have the North Face, synthetic, 20 degree, mummy bag
    Wal-Mart, 20 X 72 X 0.5 ground pad and a lite fleece zipper bag
No tarp yet pending ridgeline and insulation option

    I just read a review on the Hennessy over and under shelter system;
http://www.backpackgeartest.org/revi...0Kurt%20Papke/ and it appears this system (or diy equivalent) may work with my untested CE and may eliminate a quilt or two

I plan on three-season Skyline Drive three-four-night backpacking

Reason for post is to gather more opinion with respect to quilt verses no-quilt using this over/under cover system

If this topic has been discussed please point me to link

    Thank you
    John

In my opinion you will do just fine with the mummy bag that you own. Just unzip it most of the way, leave a bit zipped for a footbox and use it as a quilt. At least until you invest in a real quilt.
I still use all my sleeping bags. Bring sleeping clothes and if you are cold, sit on the edge of your hammock with sleeping bag on, pull it around you and zip up some, lay back and zip 'er all the way. You will be warmer with no air leaks.
Have a good & fun trip!

It is my understanding the Super Shelter system is designed specifically for the HH hammocks. The Under cover is designed to slip over the suspension ropes and down past the whipping. I don't know if that would fit the Claytor or not. If I understand correctly the SS has minimal adjustability in terms of length and width and is designed for the "asym" design of the HH. It might be worth contacting Hennessy to inquire as to its usefulness on other systems.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I am the author of said review... I'd be hesitant to assume that the Hennessy gear would work with any other brand of hammock. It is dimensioned to fit the HH models, and even within the Hennessy line there are two sizes to adapt to the different hammock sizes.

Do a little digging into "hammock socks" on this forum. In essence, the Hennessy SuperShelter is a customized two-part sock.

Yep - or if you still want a two-part system, a sil undercover like the Garlington Taco would be very easy. And there are a few DIY top covers around if you search this forum. One is for the JRB Bridge hammock and another is NCPatrick's (I think) top cover for the Hennessy. So adapting one for your hammock shouldn't be too difficult at all.

There are several threads and pics on HF for hammock socks, and here are my DIY links as well.

Jeff, you are most likely thinking of headchange4u's top cover.

Yep - that's the one. Thanks NCPatrick.

    Thanks for the replies

The cost of a down quilt and keeping it dry (from external elements) was my initial concern

First thought I could eliminate the under quilt by using a ‘hammock sock’ (new term here) or something similar to the HH super shelter

Now I read with great interest about Hugger’s super shelter internal moisture problem
    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=6016

I don’t understand how body sweat gets on the other side of a watertight fabric must be something else going on like frost on the inside of a window on a very cold night

Guess I’ll read up on the peapod next
    Cons … bulk, high cost
Pros … cozy warm on a very cold night
Wonder if the peapod suffers internal moisture problems???

But I don’t know if I am a cold weather hammock sweater or not
never had cold weather internal moisture problem while in a 20-degree synthetic bag over a pad in pick-up load bed or cot or ground

Can’t wait to test cold weather hammock camping

also, something like the overcover would not replace your top insulation (either a top quilt or sleeping bag) the overcover will just add a few degrees of warmth to the interior of the hammock (maybe 10 deg warmer than the outside) you'll still need real top insulation in almost any outdoor sleeping situation other than extremely hot night time temps.
