Making a UQ from a mummy bag?

I have some extra down, MUMMY sleeping bags that are pretty good. I would like to make one into an UQ. What is the width of the typical UQ? Has anyone had good success with this?

It seems like mummy bags work better as top quilts since the zipper typically only goes down part way, leaving a sort of footbox. That's how I use my mummy bag anyway. You would need to do quite a bit of cutting and hemming to make a mummy bag work; you might be better off picking up a cheap rectangular sleeping bag from Wal-Mart or some such place and following the principle in Shug's link.

Just remember to keep that sucker as wide as possible. the wider it is (within reason) the more insulation you will have so less chance for air gaps and slipping of the UQ from under you.

Yeah, I expect to have some alterations done (I don't sew).
I have a couple of pretty nice bags, 600+ down, in the closet, doing nothing. So it makes sense to put 'em to some good use.
I just don't know how wide they must be for a UQ. And is it a problem to make it tapered at the feet?
They are standard cut mummy bags. I guess if I open them they are wide at the top.
It seems the typical UQ is something like 44" wide, is that about right?
It also seems that UQ's are rectangular. Can it be narrower at the feet and still give the necessary coverage?

I would think that if you cut a hole in the very bottom of the footbox and slid that down over the end of your hammock it would work well and help keep it in place- I may be wrong though

Keeping my sleeping bag modification wide at the head let's it come up high for great insulation at the shoulders and head. It's really nice to have a wall of down on either side. Yes, there is a gap underneath at the widest point but it does not leak and will allow for a future 3/4 length UQ to be stacked.
