    Stakes, yet again...

Okay, I was perusing the Wal-mart, and bumped into something interesting. They make wooden golf tees that are 4" long now, super light and cheap. A bag of 50 is $5. That is essentially a group buy! Anyway, I was wondering what the think tank has to say about these as possible stakes? They seemed fairly durable, I tried flexing one in the bag and it seemed quite stiff.

I know some UL people shorten their shepards hook stakes, and do we use all 6" inches because we need it or because it is there?

I would not use 4 inch stakes of any kind unless it is in a drilled hole in rock. You need the length to make a stable connection in loose soil which is what most stakes go into. I have even had 6-inch stakes that were set at a 45 degree angle or better get pulled out of the ground if the soil was damp. In sand of course you will need something in the 12 inch range to be able to hold.

It also depends on what the stake is trying to hold. The greater the load the larger the stake needs to be. This is just simple physics.

If you are looking for light weight you can always grab a couple off nearby rocks or tie your lines to the bases of nearby trees.

You can also try them out in your backyard and see if they will work for you.

4" inches seems a little short for a properly buried stake at least for me. My shortest tend to be 6". But never say never!

I have 8" and 10" stakes that I take depending on where I am going... I wouldn't trust half the length as with those length I have had them pull out with enough wind and water...
