Unhappy Lamp Oil Smell On Loaned Silnylon Tarp

Help, I loaned a Silnylon tarp to my son. He returned it smelling of lamp oil. Not knock you off your feet smell, but I can smell it. My question is how do I get it gone (not the tarp) I really do not want to use the tarp smelling of lamp oil. Plus is it a fire danger to use?

All useable suggests are most welcome. No I will not loan him my gear again!

    Thank you in advance.

Go to a sporting goods dept, or store, and get some Scent Killer Spray in the deer hunting section, spray it on and it will kill any scent. Before you do that, take and wash it down with a cloth and maybe even a lite soap and rinse the lamp oil off it and let it dry,,but the Scent Killer will take anything out.

Maybe try a slurry of baking soda and water. Let it sit a few min then wash it off...sure can't hurt.
    Good luck,

Also maybe try some Dawn dish soap, should get the oil residue off. Works on otters and pelicans at oil spills, might work on the tarp.
    Good luck,

The easiest would be just to put it up for about a week.

I thought about using Tech-Wash or the McNutt product, but I was not sure about using it on Silnylon.

Right now, the tarp is sitting in the bath tub with a little bit of water and a big box of baking soda sprinkled in the water.

I thought since the tarp is Silicone-nylon, the other products would just mess up the surface of the tarp.

Really I have no idea of what I am doing. I use baking soda to clean all kinds of things, I also use salt as an abrasive agent, which is not what I need now. I have used cornstarch and or baking soda when lamp oil has been spilled on shoes, carpet or clothing.

i've been trusting some pretty expansive gear to TECH-WASH for many years

not sayin it wont skunk me some day, but unless it does, i'll keep using it

there is another product from the folks @ NIKWAX, that i use

    Nikwax TX-Direct 2.0 Wash-In Water Repellent Treatment

    http://www.rei.com/product/724690/ni...reatment-10-oz

it restores the water repellency in older items

THANK YOU FOR THE HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS. ALL VERY SOUND. If the baking soda does not do the trick I will use the other suggestions. Baking soda is the least harmful and least expensive. The other ideas I have used on my clothing, they are next on the list.

Lamp Oil is paraffin, not likely to be affected by any non-detergent/soap product...

I like the dawn idea, but having never washed SIL...
