    Fabric weight question

Just bought some fabric from Wally world and wanted to make sure I understand the weight right to determine if I need double layer or single be fine.

Bought 4 yards. Weighed it on kitchen scale and it is 1lb 2oz or 18oz.
So 18/4 = 4.5 oz per yard.. Is that the correct way to figure that?

Seems heavy when compared to what I see most folks using. Weight of the hammock is not a problem since this is first one to make and will go in scout/car camping stuff.
    Fabric is http://www.walmart.com/ip/Springs-Cr...slite/21853423

    Thanks

The weights we use are per square yard (36"x36"). Your calculation uses lineal yards (60"?x36") giving you a heavier weight.

Ah thanks! So going to weight per square inch then back to 36" X 36" would make this

    2.7 oz material..

Any added treatments or inks will increase the weight over the base weight. So, for example it is PU coated that will make the weight more than untreated fabric. If is heavily camo the ink used for the pattern will add weight. Not much, but enough to make a few tenths of an ounce/square yard.

As far as strength, unless you are a really heavy guy (>350) I would think a single layer would support your weight but a double layer would provide the ability to insert a pad between the layers. If you expect to use under quilts then the double layer may simply be added weight with no real benefit.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

    Nift,

Whadda ya think about the fabric? I am going to pick some up at WM tomorrow and start some projects with it....a knotty-mod hammock and a sock.

What are you planning to do with it?

    Not bad fabric.

Whipped end with channels in case I change mind. Seems plenty strong even for a large person.

Finally found local source for am-steel cordage. Now working on tree straps and chance to go hang.

Redden Marine has a good price, ships quickly and has free shipping this weekend.

Yes I've used Redden Marine for my first Amsteel purchase, but I was hoping to find a local source.

Thanks for the intel on the free shipping though, might be time for another order!

Friend picked me some up at local lake boat supply house. Lake is large enough to accommodate sail boats so they had a good ranging supply. Smallest they go is 1/8" but that is ok with me.
