    Tarp Skins....Now what?

ok, i had tarp skins on my last tarp (the WB SF) and i STILL packed them into the stuff sack after they were tightened up into the skins. kinda redundant ya know?

so what do most of you guys do with your tarps in skins? i have 2 major "situations" to carry them, either in the pack or in side luggage of the motorcycle. i dont trust them strapped to the exterior of the bike, but i think theyd be ok under the bungees of the lid on the pack.

never quite figured out what to do afterwards, i mean theyre so dang long in the skins (12+ft...), but the UGQ WD12 is huge as it is in the stuff sack.

Once I skin my tarp and take it off the trees I just fold it over on itself into a wad, wrap my ridgelines around it nice and tight and stuff into outside mesh pocket of my pack. My 11' x 8' DIY hex tarp is about the size of a softball, so it doesn't take up a whole lot of space, and I don't worry about loosing it. Of course I'm not on a bike with it either.

i use the same exact method as you.my pack has a top compartment with a zipper on the inside.thats where i keep my light and t p .there is a zipper on the outside thats where i keep my tarp.i can deploy it from there without opening my pack in the rain.the tarp is light so it doesnt throw off the balance of the pack with weight high.

I fold my HH Hex in its skins in half twice and wrap the ridgeline around it to hold it folded. Rides in the side pocket of my pack. Balances my Hatchet.

I've put it back in the stuff sack near the top of the pack or left in the skins alone and in the mesh outer pockets of my pack.

I use Velcro cable ties (like these) rather than skins, but the principle is the same. I fold it over on itself twice (minimum) and then wrap with the ends of my CRL. It then gets strapped to the pack along with everything else. Easy-peasy.

I'm on the verge of dumping the skins and going back to using the mesh bishop sack that I pack the tarp with the skins on them anyway. Skins are nice for storage while the tarp hangs, but the sack makes deployment really easy.
Been off the bike for over a year now, but just got cleared to jump on again - limited size/hp and going to stay off the highway for the most part. Carried the tarp in the sack on the bike before crashing a Kawi 250 on a mountain pass road under repair. No damage to the gear in Wolfman bags.
Was OK on the Uly, but rode it a lot slower on those kinds of roads.

I use skins for the "not having a tarp blowing around like crazy when I'm tying it to a tree" factor- the extra weight penalty i can take. I put mine back into the stuff sack.
my hammock gear weights total: 2430g (~86oz)
    Winter: total 2521 (~89oz)
(see my profile for detailed weights)

I ditched the skins and use a mesh stuff sack. Then it goes into the top flap pocket on the pack. Along with the tree hugers and 4 stakes. That way nothing in the main compartment gets wet or nasty.
