    joining ccf pad sections

    Hi All
I am planning to cut a ccf pad I have and the plan is to cut it to fit into my ula pack as the back support. I want the pad to be maybe a 3/4 length, I will cut the pad into 3 or 4 sections and join each section with duct tape so that I can fold it to fit the pack.

Now the questions, is there a better way to join the sections than duct tape?
If the tape moves and becomes a little unstuck will it leave the pad sticky?

    Thanks
    Gunn

I think you may be right... if the duct tape comes off, it will leave a sticky surface exposed.
I've herd of people getting good results gluing ccf pads together w/ "Barge Cement", but if you overlapped them & glued them, it wouldn't give you the flexible hinge that I understood you to be wanting.

I have wondered about using "Barge Cement" to glue the pad sections together using a section of fabric (1.9 ripstop?) as a "hinge"???
    Could be worth a try.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Barge works very effectively on a fabric to ccf bond. It was originally developed as a cobblers adhesive if my sources are correct. In any event the key behind using barge for dis-similar surfaces is to put the bond under pressure. If I were going to glue a hinge of fabric to foam wkth Barge I would first coat each surface with the adhesive and let it dry thoughly. Then use another coat on each each surface and let it dry until just barely tacky. Following that pposition each oiece carefully and press firmly. After the bonds are made by normal pressure take a rubber mallet and piecoe of thin plywood and wallop the daylights out of it. Then let the seam set up until completely dry.

The bond will remain flexible as that is the nature of Barge but do not let it run down in between the pieces of foam or you will have to cut through the crack to get it to bend properly.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Sounds Similar To What Needed For My Pack. Instead Of Cutting The Ccf All The Way Into Seperate Sections I Cut Slots In It At Intervals Of Approx 8 Inches Which Allowed Me To Fold The Ccf Pad So It Would Lay Flat Against Itself. I Have Used It For Two Years Now And It Is Still In One Piece. There Is A Pic Someplace In My Gallery Of What I Did.
What I lack in knowledge I MORE than make up for with opinions.

Instead of cutting it into sections, just "score" it. Cut halfway thru the thickness of the pad to create the fold.

I've seen it done somewhere. Also, someone else just folded the pad, and laid heavy objects on top for a day and the folds stayed nicely.

Why not just velcro the sections together. I've done that with wings and it worked quite well. When I pack it up I simply remove the wings. I have some pics somewhere. I've also glued a 4" piece of nylon along the edges of two sections so that it acts as a hinge while keeping the two pieces together. That also worked quite well.

the barge cement idea would work, i've resoled my climbing shoes many times, i was instructed to put as thin a layer as possible on both surfaces, let dry (only a few mins since it's a thin layer) apply some heat to the surfaces (probably not necessary in this application) and stick them together and then apply either clamping pressure or apply weight to it for a few hours.

i think this would be a great application for c3 double-sided sailmaking tape though. that stuff works well on ccf and fabric.
