    gathered end hammock

Just wanted to ask people who have made these style hammocks. Why not just tie the end in a knot? Why go through the step of whipping?

    Thanks

You can tie a knot for sure....just make the hammock a bit longer.
    Ed Speer style.

Funny you said that. I undid my spear hammock to "fix" the high sides and saw he knotted it. Little adjusting, another knot put back in and now its the way I like it.

The speer knot works fine, (like shug said, just make the hammock body a little longer) ------but its kind of permenant. (not impossible to untie, but not easy) I think most people try whipping the ends because you can change the way its gathered/folded and change the way the hammock feels when you lay in it. Have you checked out Just Jeffs hammock page? He gives a great description of whipping. (tie-wraps/zip ties/cabel ties what ever you want to call them----work great!)
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

I have checked out Jeff's page. Good stuff. I was able to get Spear's hammock to un knot which allowed me to adjust the way it was originally set. A new knot was put in and now it is the most comfortable hammock I own.

    Thanks

I ordered two of the crinkle taffeta tablecloths that people are turning into hammocks ( 60"X126" ). I made a knotted end hammock from one, and a gathered end hammock from the other.

Both work great, but the non-knotted hammock is of course a tad longer. I actually used the knotted end one this weekend at a Boy Scout campout to show the boys how easy it was to make their own.

If you are OK with losing a percentage of finished length to the knots then you are good to go
