I bought a nylon backpack rain cover that has elastic on the sides and put a carabiners at each end' draw cord. I clip the one carabiner to the suspension line at the foot, and the other on the hammock side tie out. the backpack cover acts as a small baby hammock that keeps my excess gear off the ground and acts as a shelf.
I like the idea of the smaller dull length hammock and you could hang it right off to the side instead of beneath you so you can access it while laying. I figure that I could still use the backpack cover on the head end and access it that way but only used it on my last hang and need to try it out again before expanding on it further.
Or you could buy a grand trunk ultra light for $22 and do the same with smaller items not falling through the mesh.

Those do look nice. I like having a place to set things out as I make camp.
I have this strong feeling that I would be putting my foot straight into the thing trying to get out in the middle of the night - loud crash followed by many unmentionables.

That's what pee bottles are for!
I've got a mesh hammock (need to cut the steel rings off to replace with soft shackles as they're quite heavy). I normally hang it with the suspension coming off the trees at a tangent so it's not directly in line with my hammock - makes it easier to work with.
A friend of mine hangs his directly from the ends of his hammock and I might try this next time
AmJustDuane makes a nice small hammock, which is multi use. Here's a link to one of his video's.

His HF name is SteelerNation.
Here's a link to his Camp Seat/Gear Hammock/Pack Cover. Pretty DIY cool idea.
