Crinkle Taffeta - Comfort? Volume? Weight?

Looking for some feedback from users who are hanging on the polyester crinkle taffeta material (table cloth blanks).

Comfort: How does this material complare to rip-stop or nylon taffeta for comfort? Do you find it uncomfortable after a long night?

Volume: Looking for a packed-size comparison of a single layer of crinkle taffeta versus a double layer of 1.1oz ripstop. Am I going to be eating up a lot of pack space with this stuff?

Weight: I know it's around 2.6oz per sq yard. That said, do you find the crinkle taffeta hammocks noticably heavier than a double layer nylon hammock?

Looking for positives and negatives. Thanks!

You can't really go wrong with those blanks. Of course, do a little math, 2 x 1.1 < 2.6 oz/sy , so there's only a slight difference in weight or bulk. It's comfortable enough. Personally I like the give and feel of a single 1.4 or 1.5, but it's all apples and onions. Everybody likes what they like and some love the crinkle.

There aren't really any negatives that I can think of. For $13, if you hit them when there's free shipping, (like now I believe,) what could be negative? If you hate it, you have a tablecloth.

I sleep in a single layer crinkle taffeta hammock every night. Needless to say, It's very comfortable.

Compared to my ripstop hammocks, it doesn't stretch nearly as much (if at all). Personally, I prefer the stretch of 1.5 ounce ripstop. At 160 pounds, it feels just right to me. If you weigh more, a double layer or the taffeta material, may feel better to you, but you may find it different for yourself.

At 2.6 ounce, the taffeta is a heavier material than say 1.1 or 1.5 ounce ripstop, so it stands to reason that a hammock made from it will weigh more and take up more volume when packing. Frankly, that's then only negative I can think of. But, that's only a negative if you are light enough to be able to use a lighter weight fabric.

Cost is a big positive. A taffeta blank cannot be beat for building a low cost DIY hammock.

    Didn't care for it

Not sure why, but the TCF hammock I made seemed to just swallowed me. Maybe I didn't experiment with sag enough, but was hard to get out of. Wish I had known you wanted one of these...we could have done some trading.

I have just made a couple of them.
I think they are very comfortable. I gave the 60"x126" one that I made away at the hang but I can weigh the 90"x132" and the 90"x156".
The 60"x126" was very comfortable and stuffed into a 12x6" stuff sack.
The 90"x132" is pure luxury and the 90x156" is just insanely too big and not really worth it.

This is the 90x126" with whoopies and knotty mod.

Comfort = perfect in every way, best hammock I have.

Volume = takes up way more space than my son's 1.1; it is not as compressible... but then I have 12' x 90" hammock

Weight = yep, it's obviously heavier, if I were a big backpacker and had to put this on my back, it's not something I'd choose....but it is something that I'd want. Doesn't mean that I always make sense either.

I like them a lot. They don't pack down as well and they are a bit heavier, but they are just as comfy as far as I'm concerned.....and for the price and the fact that you don't have to do anything but whip the ends, I don't think you can beat them.

Personally, if I have to lay my face on anything, I like crinkle taffeta better. It seems to be a lot softer than ripstop nylon. But I'll take ripstop nylon every time for its weight and compressibility because I use a flight pillow which keeps my face off the hammock.

Have two on the way. Has anyone done both the gathered and the whipped.
And if so, which did you prefer?
