    Hi Edge308-

Sorry to hear about your uncomfortable night! Most of us have been there at one time or another. Just as it takes some time & a number of trips to learn the ins and outs of tent camping, so it goes with hammock camping.

In my first night in a hammock, I had the thing strung tight as a guitar string between two trees. Laid down in it, tried to wriggle into the sleeping bag, and looked like a kayaker doing the first half of a roll: I spun 180* horizontally and SPLAT!

So, the best advice I can offer now is: try out your setup before you need to depend on it in the woods. Sleeping bags and pads in hammocks DO work: but not all pads work well in all hammocks due to differences in hammock width, length, etc. Sleeping bags work as top quilts, you don't zip yourself into it, etc. It takes some practice to sort it out, and there's a TON of info and helpful people here to lend aid.

And, by the way, welcome to the world of hammocking! It can be both ultra-light AND ultra-comfortable!

You'd have to be a circus acrobat to wiggle into a sleeping bag, while staying on a pad. In fact we have a circus acrobat here who even refuses to do that. Get a under quilt and top quilt, and you'll never look back.

Try the pad inside the bag with you... If there is room in your bag I found that was better for me. Getting in is like riding a bike (easy if you can do it but seems impossible when you yet cannot). I lay the bag in place and go butt first, swing up the legs, then zip up as I lay back.

Also consider if you went to WM and got a nice tent you'd be dealing with leaky seams and twenty pounds of fiberglass poles that still won't stand up to a stiff breeze.

I took the plunge though, and bags just aren't made for hammocks. Hope you find what works for you!

So I am new to hanging and decided I would go all in and purchase solid gear from the start.. Was done with tenting...I can assure you it was well worth every dollar, good hammock, underquilt and tarp... I use a Canadian military extreme cold weather system as a top quilt.. the inner bag with liner works just just like a TQ and has a great cold weather rating down to at least -20*C..if I add the outer bag can get down to -40*C with ease... I tinkered with the set up in the garage and then first hang was a stealth hang in -3*C and it was the best sleep I have had... It could have been influenced by a consumption of little JD..none the less it was perfect...
When asked why I sleep with my shoes on? I don't need to out run a bear, just need to out run my camp mates.

Don't feel bad about the Walmart Hammock, it's a starting point. I'm still using my first Hammock a Grand Trunk Ultralite that I got as a gift. My first night out, I used a Walmart Blue CCF Pad, a $6.00 Poly Tarp and my 20* Mummy Bag. Before heading out I swapped out the stock suspension after watching some Juggling Guy on Youtube talk about hammocks. Heck I still watch his videos. Whoopie slings and tree straps are almost a necessity. I say almost because there are other options that work for other hangers, I'm just comfortable with Whoopies and Straps. Also if you haven't don so yet, check out "The Ultimate Hang" it's a fun read.
