The hammock was not your problem I use the same one in the summer it is the same as the Eno doublenest! Use your sleeping bag as a topquilt and get a good UQ! Down!
Make sure your distance and angle is right and you should get a good flat lay as long as you lay at an angle! If you want to use your thermarest let all but a little air out and you will find your sweet spot eventually! Good luck!

Hang in there! I would get out in the backyard and test your gear before heading out. You will find that watching Shugs videos is very informational and then you will develop an addiction! LOL! Same for the forums. You are most certainly in the right place. As for pads, splurge for an underquilt. I was a pad sleeper then went to a DIY summer underquilt and just ordered a Hammockgear 0 degree incubator underquilt. Its crazy how much better it is with an underquilt. Good luck and just have fun with it.

I remember when I first started using a pad. It was a comedy and I was waking up trying to adjust the pad back under me. The best thing that I ever did was buy an UQ. It really made sleeping in a hammock a pleasure. With the UQ, when you climb in you feel warmth within the first minute. It is amazing. My UQ's are from Jacks R Better. Having been using them for many years.

Right gear...wrong gear, who's to say....Like most things Experience is what you need. Hang that sucker in the yard and try different things, its what'll end up happening after you consider all the suggetions anyway...theres no such thing as the "perfect setup", only the setup that perfect for you!
