Tarp Ridgelines and tie outs; how thick?

Quick question; is 1.25 mm Z-line spectra cord as sold by ZPack

    http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/spectra_cord.shtml

strong enough for a 12 ft cuben fiber hammock tarp? I know this would make good tie out material but wondered if you need more thickness/strength for the ridgeline? I'm planning on a continuous ridgeline for now.

    Thanks all

Spectra is some strong stuff. It doesn't give any load specs on the zpacks site but I would bet you have no problem with strength. I am of course shooting from the hip on this one and have never used that stuff. My dyneema 2.0mm will easily hold my tubby self so you should be fine for holding up a tarp.

I believe the load weight is under 200 pounds - easily strong enough. The only issue I have heard (but have not experienced) is a possible sawing at the material due to very thin cord. For those that feel this is an issue - many do not use a continuous ridgeline.

i had a 1.75 zing it ridge line hold in 50 plus winds,it held well, but i used it because it was all i had i later moved it up to larger line .i went with an above tarp crl it works good, you just have to get used to a rounder look instead of a crisp fold on the ridge line.good luck, sounds like the equipment fairy came again.enjoy

I've been using that stuff for years. Good for tarps. Not good for structural ridge lines.

I agree with Sgt. Rock. I Like it for my tarp. I have it on both a sil and cuben tarp. No issues so far. Another member told me you have to be a bit careful if you tie off to sharp object, ie in rocky areas. He said it cuts the sheath then the line has problems. The braided Dynema works better for that situation. I love how stiff the z-line is. It is hard to get tangled, and that is a huge plus.

Actually the gear fairy hasn't come Hairbear.....at least not yet

I'm also rethinking my tarp ridgelines and tie outs all together for my existing tarps. I love the Dutch Flyz but have read they're too rough on this Z-string from ZPack. I guess Dutch recommends 1.75 zing-it; so I'm thinking of using the 1.25 Z-String for tie outs and then buying a spool of the 1.75 zing-it (same color) to use with Dutch Flyz for my hammock ridgeline.

With a Cuben fiber tarp I feel like I should run the ridgeline above the tarp but I don't have anything to base that on other than a feeling

Also, does anyone have suggestions on what diameter shock cord they'd recommend for tarp doors or even for tarp tie outs?

Appreciate it guys! Can't wait for the weekend Hairbear; my boy is going to be hot in the zero degree TQ and UQ; I'm going to let him use the good stuff so he'll like it and want to go again, I'm going with the 20 degree 3/4 Phoenix UQ with a foot pad

    Thanks all
