I almost forgot to mention that I will be installing my pull outs tomorrow. I'll be able to use the Blackbird pull outs with no cutting of the sock. Stay tuned for pictures!.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Here's the promised pictures of the "no cut but will have to sew to make it work pull outs" for the WBBB. Simply sewed 4 mini "D" rings in the right spots. The pull outs on the hammock go to the d ring inside the sock and the sock is pulled out by another d ring on the opposite side of the fabric. Took all of 30 minutes to remove the sock, sew the rings and replace the sock. I need to get the lengths correct and the pull outs on the hammock aren't pulled out 100%, but it pulls out enough to work.

This will only work when the sock is the gigantic extra fabric model I'm using. Regular sock users will need to come up with another trick pony.

Thank you, Priller! I'm just happy to have my Blackbirds shelf back!

It's finally snowing here in Indiana - there's about 1 inch on the ground and combined with a 40mph wind, I have great testing conditions. Low is supposed to be low 20's. Will give much too detailed info on how I survived in the morning.

I tested the setup last night and finally quit a 4am due to 40-50 mph winds here. The temps aren't bad - 28*. Let me tell you that a sock, no matter how tightly tied down or buttoned up, will still act like a parachute with a strong enough wind! Snow being blown at that speed tends to get into everything.

My tarp tie down stakes were not up to task in the yard - instant pull up from the wind. I don't know how much force was being applied, but it was awesome to see. I took the tarp down and suffered thru with just the sock buttoned up tight.

No, I have a very open yard with no real wind breaks. So back to the shed. After 30 minutes the temps inside the sock crept up to 40*. Still no condensation, but lots of melting snow that got trapped inside.

As long as your not exposed to high winds, I believe in socks. If I was in the woods, I would have found a natural wind break. Still and all, I got 5 hours of sleep and was very warm. I don't (knock on tree) believe Mt. Rogers will be that bad next month.

Here's the parachute sock in action.

Thanks for the report, Lost_Biker and glad you survived.
Your sock probably would have faired better if the tarp had held up to shield it from the wind.

I have a question. After you added the zipper door, did you sew up the TED style opening at the top? In the picture, it looks as if the top is still open and the wind got in there and stretched the shock cord. Is that what happened?

Hi MADD. Nope - didn't sew it. It's rare we have winds this strong though 20mph is normal. If I was out in the woods and could use the lay of the land and trees to shelter me it would have been much better. My yard sucks. I still slept in it - 240lbs tends to take a bit more force to move and once in it the top snapped shut, but I had snow drift thru every little crack in the sock.

Finally with the snow and temps down to 19*, I went to the woods and spent the night. As long as the wind is below 20mph - no problem at all with the sock. I didn't even use a tarp. Was warm and dry - outside temp 20* at 11pm and inside temp was 34*. I didn't wake up til almost 8am the next morning. I like how quiet the material is.

    Thanks Dos!

Ha! Yes, it's gotten to be a truly on going thing. I just want to see how far this thing can go and so far, I'm really puzzled about how much heat this thing traps. An average of 12-15 degree difference. That shouldn't happen with a sock like this - it has way too much volume. Maybe Elvin magic?

Sorry to be fixated on it. Ain't science/magic and hammocks fun?
