Video : a brief history of DIY bridge hammocks

For those of you who figured you would take a miss on the Bridge Hammock Thread until the movie came out, your wait is over.

I've put together a documentary style pair of videos on DIY bridge hammocks. I'll put the embedded versions at the bottom of the post.

Next time I do something like this I'll scare up a wireless microphone. Even though I was in a city park with about 100 acres of woods, you can hear the traffic, in one case an airplane. Sounds like I'm in the middle of an intersection. I tinkered some with audio editing but the results of that were worse than the traffic sounds.

The only thing more painful than hearing yourself speak on an audio recording is seeing yourself speak on a video recording. "ah duh,", "hmm", "oh"... If there are some transitions that seem particularly abrupt it's because something fairly terrible had to be clipped out.

My thanks to the 14 (count 'em, 14) Hammock Forums members who I found who built a DIY bridge hammock and posted pictures. Every one of them consented to have their photos used, and one even took some more for me to use unbidden. Apologies to anyone I missed.

Thanks to turk also, for the Hammock TV cover. I liked it.

Lastly, the apparent synchronization between sound and video at the very end of part 2 was completely, utterly, and totally accidental. I shot that scene without any thought to sound, later decided on the tune to play, and lined up the end of the sound track with the end of the video. It Just Happened that way. Really.

I'd like to see your attachment rings for the spreaders. I hadn't seen that yet.
Also, the first one I made was corded but switched to the webbing because of the bunching and pain on the legs....

Now i know everything about bridge hammocks.

I don't mind the sounds you mentioned, i'm just glued to to screen.
I can't even imagen the time and effort you put into this.
Especially, just after the vintage thing (both hammock and video).

Ha!
The very first one I sewed didn't make it past first entry!
I can't remember how I sewed it to the cord but I tried entering by sitting one end and it proceeded to rip right away....pulled all the stitching right out....

great videos Grizz. Thanks for showcasing some of the camping world's finest DIY work!
I took much knowledge from the HammockForums and its members, applied it to my own style (UL) and only have all of you to thank.
(since adding my pad sleeve, the weight is 13.7 if im using my hiking poles. 19.8 if I use the spreader bars)
I think its awesome that you included my humble attempt at DIY hammock sewing in your video. Thanks a million.

*edit: I thought the close up of my UQ rigging system with my Jolly Roger grosgrain was a cool touch. thanks for that pic!
talk about homemade, the UQ bungee is a hair tie stolen from my wife... dont tell her!

Excellent work. I am honored to be showcased in with the rest of the rogues. One minor point is the Bottom Entry/Exit Portal (BEEP) is only used on the gathered mode of the Double Mode Bridge (DMB). I noticed you omitted that step in evolution. Any particular reason for that?

Wow .... all this video action since yesterday ... I am gettin' nothing done!
I love it Grizz. Fantastic job seeing the bridge in sorta real life. I love when you use those big math words ... parabolic ....

OK I am off to watch part 2 now but I am really impressed with your vid. Funny that when making a movie you don't hear the "world noise" but it is so noticeable when you watch back in editing.
I know how much work goes into these labor of loves. They are adding immensely to this site in my opinion........
OK, OK off to part 2. Whoooooooooo .....Bridge History.
