What is the proper method to make this adjustment properly? My manual is sketchy regarding this. I'm using a Singer 251 class machine with a roller presser foot.......

Here's a short video of the different adjustments and the impact they have - this is for quilts, but works for all fabrics. Adjustments are different for all machines and fabrics. Some experimentation is involved for light weight fabrics.

I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Thanks for the link LB.
While I don't know much about the effect of too much pressure on thin fabrics, I did learn about too little pressure.
After thoroughly cleaning and lubing a new-to-me 401A, the first test stitches were uneven in length and tended to be more closely spaced then the stitch length indicator would suggest. I hadn't tightened the pressure regulator knob enough when reassembling. Once the pressure was increased, the stitches became uniform and of correct length.
Aint it fun? My 201 was giving me fits with 1.1 nylon (puckering) untill I loosened the foot pressure quite a bit. Now it's pretty smooth. I also had the threat tension mysteriously increase for some reason - found that the thread would pop off the bobbin hook(?) if I had pressure on the thread when I cut it with scissors. Drove me nuts for awhile. Now I cut the thread when it's "slack" and no more problems.
Little adjustments cause big changes and I have FINALLY learned not to tinker with settings anymore. I found what works and I leave it alone!
