    Polyester VS. Polypropylene

I'm making some DIY tree huggers for my whoopie sling set up and I've come to the for in the road were I need to choose either polyester or polypropylene to construct them out of. I'm interested in the pros and cons in each and what one makes for a better hugger.

polypro webbing is often signifigantly weaker than polyester webbing, the most commonly avail polypro is quite weak (400# for 1" width i think) there is stronger polypro out there but much harder to find. you want something 1500-2500 lbs break strength, polypro or polyester of this strength should be pretty stretch resistent, finding polyester this strong should be pretty easy

^^^ All that's true. I will say heavy polypro can be softer in the hand though. It's nicer to use. Might wear more as a result but I like it.

You can use either one if the specs are okay.

I have never tried polypro, but I like polyester. I just ordered some from strapworks.com. They now have many colorful patterns at the same price as solid colors. My webbing order sort of matches the ACU digital of my hammock outer layer. Pretty cool. I must say I got some 1.5" seatbelt webbing, and didn't like it. It is slicker than a cat's behind!

A buddy of mine ordered what he thought was 1" polyester webbing from fabric.com. However we now believe it to be polypro because at the point where the strap passes through the fixed loop to hug the tree the webbing basically started melting from the friction of him just moving around in the hammock. Again I'm not 100% sure it's polypro but it dang sure ain't polyester!

Yup, poloypro friction melts. I've had a marlin spike hitch melt through from the friction of the "knot" tightening on itself

(I know hitches aren't knots but it was the easiest way to communicate it)

Yikes. Sounds like the polypro may not be the option im looking for on this one then. No one wants a melted tree hugger. Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

Hmm, I'll have to watch for that melting business...

Polypro does fine in suspensions and as tree savers.... most is rated in the 700+ range...Hammock suspenion when properly hung don't come anywhere close to those weight limits... It is typically lighter than poly, the same or less water absorbsion and wears well.

Ed Speer pioneered its use in hammock suspensions.
