what do you do with your pack

hey guys, my testing is going well and i am leaning towards teh hammock for the thru hike in 2 weeks.

but, where do you put your gear? your pack boots, etc. I have read about people hanging em, but where do you hang em? i'm guessing under the tarp some where or under the hammock on the ground. but what if it rains a ton, won't water run into the pack?

yea, i know it is sooooooooo newbie..........

I use my DIY Jeff's All In One as a gear hammock. JRB also sells the All-In-One if you don't want to make one.

Look around - this has been discussed a couple of times before. There's a variety of good, tested solutions to this problem.

I was thinking about putting a rope on the top and bottom of my pack, then attaching the other end to the head and foot ends of the hammock supports. Might work as a gearhammock without anything extra.

Not tried yet. The all in one serves as a pack cover too.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

i simply tie my pack to the tree at the foot of my HH.. then i put my poncho over it and snap one side around the tree..i drape the rest of the poncho over the foot end of my HH..i use this as a front porch so to speak..if raining i can get to my gear and be dry..if i need to take a walk for natures call i quickly untie my pack put it in my hammock and wear my poncho..reverse when i get back..it works for me

I'm also new to hammocks, but have had an idea for my pack. Has anyone tied a ridgeline tight enough that they could hang their pack horizontally from it over their feet? This way it stays under the tarp, and you could hang it from carabiners or something so you could pull it towards you to get something out, and push it back out of your face when you don't need it. I was going to try it this weekend, and was hoping someone else who has tried this could give a couple hints to make this work. I just imagine if the ridgeline is made of a rope that stretches a lot, or isn't tight enough it will just sag fom the weight and the pack will rest on your feet.

the problem comes with streach..if your ridge line isnt blood tight..the pack will slide to the lowest point..usually directly above you..which means it will be in the way for everything...i have tied a ridge line that tight before..but when i got into the hammoch the trees leaned in just a tiny bit..this gave the ridgeline slack...i would wake up with the pack 2 inches above my face..

It works fine, just put a prusik on the ridgeline and clip one end of the pack to that. No sliding.
