The weakness of separate underquilts - that they move around under you - is also their great strength - they can move and be adjusted more easily than the fill of an insulated hammock. Also the hammock can be washed separately from the quilt. However, I use insulated hammocks almost exclusively and have models for different seasons. They are more difficult to make than separate underquilts, and what works for me might not work for someone a different size and shape. I'm still working on a basic one-season insulated hammock that can be supplemented for colder weather. Tonight I'll use my 3-season hybrid hammock (synthetic fill + down) that I showed at MAHHA along with the JRB Nest underquilt that I won there. This combination kept me nice and warm at 16° F. last week, with no hammock sock and a "summer" tarp setup. Tonight it should only go down to 25° F.
The points that pgibson and silversurfer made are well taken, but some of us persist in crafting DIY insulated hammocks. They have some benefits.
