    Tarp Guy lines

I just changed out the factory (black) ground guy line on my HHT Hex Tarp with bright orange reflective cordage. The rope is nothing special. It's approximately the same size as my 7/64 Amsteel and is rated at 50 lbs.

Good Idea? Bad Idea? Doesn't Really Matter?

(I left the ridgelines as they were)

Most like something a bit smaller and stronger but no reason it won't work as long as it's a material that won't stretch. You want to be able to pull your tarp tight and have it stay that way. No fun to get up at 3am to try and retention your tarp in the rain.

I had a real problem with my guy-out stakes last weekend. The ground was frozen and I bent 2 stakes and broke 1. A fourth one I couldn't get out of the ground in the am. I'm going to buy some snow stakes from REI http://www.rei.com/product/845328/rei-snow-stake, but there was only about 5" of soft snow. Will they hold in those conditions? What would you recommend?

Primal, The snow stakes won't go into the ground at all and thats pretty shallow snow for them. They work best when buried sideways in the snow and packed in place....I would thing that it would be difficult to get enough snow in place to hold them in only 5" In those conditions I would be looking for trees, rocks, anything solid to anchor to....a pile of smaller rocks with the stake set in the bottom of the pile would work better than a steak in that little snow.

Run your guy lines thru a prussik attached to the corners of your tarp. that way if it stretches you can still tighten the lines from under the tarp.

Thanks. That's what I expected. But even though 5" is not a lot of snow, it still makes it tough to find a pile of rocks. I think the real answer was a different site with vegetation to the sides for anchors.

Buy some Dutch Tarpworms, they come with shock cord attached. That should handle any stretch from your tarp.
I used reflective pink braided mason line for my guy lines for over a year and it works great. Now I have some gray Lashit, and I highly recommend it. It is super strong and with the Tarpworms, I can leave it attached to my stakes.
