    Shortie Question

Hey there...I'm to the point where I am going to get an UQ and was curious about whether I should get a 3/4 or Torso length vs a Full Length UQ. I'm a shortie...only 5'4ish and don't really feel I need a full length. Or do I? I'm planning some winter backpacks but not planning for it to be less than 20 degrees, more like in the 30s. Cold and wet PNW weather.

Anyways, any shorties on here with similar experience and what do you think? I'm striving to be an UL/lightweight backpacker, so take that into consideration. My pack at the moment is an REI Flash52, and I also have an Osprey Exos34. Trying to get my base weight down to 12lbs or less...

If you are worried about weight, definitely go with the 3/4 length UQ. The shorter UQ will save you some weight, and be pretty close to a FL UQ for you at your height. Take a small section of reflectix with you to use as a sit pad and double in the footbox of yor TQ to suppliment your UQ if your feet get cold. Just my $.02.

Hello Pilgrim, we are close to the same height, I am a couple of inches shorter, I have a 3/4length UQ. It works great for me. I sleep cold and have problems staying warm normally. When we are hanging I seem to be able to stay very comfortable in about the same conditions you will probably experience. Gary_R would have valid pointers for you.

My wife is 4"11' and she loves the 3/4 UQ it practically covers her entire body. Even with a 3/4 at your height you may still need a pad for your feet. If your looking to save weight IMHO Id go with a 3/4th.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Thanks everyone! I think as long as I have a sit pad for my feet, I'll be fine. I am 99% sure I am going to get the HG Phoenix 20 deg 3/4 UQ....I can always sell it here if it doesn't work out, right?!

when it gets cold, i like not having to 'deal' with anything.
a full length quilt goes a long way, esp. when it gets dark at 5pm, and
you'll be in the hammock for a long night.

HG will build a phincubator... or something custom to you. leighlo quilts makes a 60" or something to that length as stock. mine is 65" long built by HG.

i consider myself a lightweight packer- and trade other items for the comfort of something that goes full length-- at least in shoulder seasons / winter when the mountains and meadows close & miles decrease.

hyoh - just what works for me.
PM me,,, i might have a fancy quilt with very little use i've been thinking of selling if you're interested.

Rip speaks the truth. I can vouch for the quilts he sells too.

I own a now discontinued JRB Mount Washington 3 Convertible TQ. It has a piece that can be removed to make it into a 2/3rds length quilt. I mostly always use it in full mode (I'm a Minnesotan and I've woken up to frost in the end of July up north). So of course, I recommend a full length UQ. I mostly paddle camp so it's weight isn't a big issue.

I'm your same height, and at those kinds of temps you would more than fine with a phoenix, that's what I use! I did just order an incubator for extreme cold, less fiddling around.
