    Sources of Tyvek

As you drive around in your part of the world, keep an eye out for home construction projects. The "white" Tyvek being used stands out pretty well. The folks doing that construction are fairly amenable to just giving you some scraps for free if approached nicely/politely.

Lowes / Home Depot now have their own brands besides the DuPont "official" Tyvek name

RE: The "noise" factor -- Throw it in the washing machine - no soap - cold water for a few minutes. It dries immediately by just shaking the water off. Comes out soft as cotton! No noise now.

    RE: The "sticky" factor
-- Yeah...<sigh>... It picks up every little bit of leaf/grass/pin needle; not unlike fleece.

RE: Waterproof -- I have never had a problem! But, like YB said, "pressure" can force some water thru. It is almost bomb-proof when it comes to puncture resistance,

Yep! I also carry a scrap for use under my hammock, a place to sit, a place to lay out gear & empty the pack w/out everything getting wet/dirty.
    Happy Trails,

I never drink water. I'm afraid it will become habit-forming.

    Tyvek as a bivy sack

A few years ago, a buddy attempted a NoBo Thru - 400+ miles before med problems forced him off. He used a very clever DIY Tyvek bivy sack with no problems. It had a "flap" to cover his head and yet allowed some space to breath / see around. Staked out with a couple sticks for uprights at the corners of the flap. Never reported any problems with water underneath and no punctures.

I save used USPS Priority Mail envelopes and then tape them together to make my groundsheet. I also use this for a sit pad. It sits right in the top of my pack.

COOL....!!!! Those envelopes are free and everywhere there is a drop-off box!

Good friend uses an envelope as a pillow. Cotton-soft when washed.

Well, they are not exactly free. Their cost is figured into the postage. You can take them for free, but you are supposed to use them for shipping only.

I bet that would take a while to make one of Grizz's Poor Man's Hammock Hut

Has anyone tried to sew the tyvek together, or is it just easier to tape it together? I think I read somewhere (to lazy to look for it right now ) that if you don't sew it right it will seperate like perforated paper...no fun in a driving rain storm.
