Double Layer Material Question

Howdy, Was considering making a double layer 1.1oz out of two different widths of material...say 48" and 60". Would do full hems down the sides on both pieces; rolled hems on short edges for whipping channel( both pieces of fabric sew together only on the short edges). The long sides would be open all the way down. I would not be using any pad between the layers..maybe a space blanket. Have any of you made something like this or see any problems with doing so? I think it would work fine as the long side rolled hems are not underneath me on a 48" width/46" w/hems...The wider material would come up on sides of 48" piece by about 6" on each long side. Purpose was to shave down some weight on a full 2 layer 1.1oz with 60" fabric and still get the "feel" of the bilayer.

I can't think of anything wrong with it although it will only save about 1.5 oz.

I'm not sure what the "feel" of two layer is. If I had no intent of using a pad, I would just go with a single layer of 1.1-1.9 oz. I space blanket by itself won't gain much (except maybe dampness) but could still be used on top of an UQ.

I agree the weight savings is small..The "feel" i was referring to was the Lack of stretch i got from a double layer of 1.1oz...the single layer version has quite a bit of stretch to me..i've made both. Perhaps just a single layer of 1.9oz would work as well? No issues with condensation so far with space blanket between the 2 layers..at least not so far..Thanks

Personally, I like my 1.1 dl better than my 1.9 single. The one problem I see with the two different size materials, is when you go to lay down, your go to have really watch where your layers are. With out the sides stitched together, even just a few short stitches a little apart, the layers are not going to stay centered on each other, I think you will find it to be a PITA, pulling and checking every time you go to lay down. It may not be to bad, when wide awake, but think about it at 2am after a call of nature.......RR

Thanks roadrunner...Scott@DIY expressed concern about the shifting of the 2 layers as well. I made a small scale version this morning out of some scrap 1.1oz. The shifting is a problem and would require pulling the fabric to center it..not good! Always better to test ideas on scrap stuff first...will just stick to standard widths now.

I would save weight by going to a 54" wide, single layer hammock. The sweet spot between too much stretch and too hard is 1.9 single or 1.1 double layered hammock. I would not go double unless you really want the flexibility to add a foam pad between the layers. I am 6'-1" and about 200# for reference, and I think 54" wide is the optimum hammock width, regardless of weight savings.
