My understanding is they just don't use BPA in them any longer. Bisphenol A was found to cause health issues so all the top companies quit using it as a plastics hardener in food grade containers.

The beauty of sunsets,
The wind in the pines,
The mountains give these and more...
Peace of mind.
Just to be completely open and honest here. the first time I tried this I failed to close the lid tightly. You can guess the results.
There are actually a few... Nalgene brand makes collapsible bottles, hard plastic bottles, soft plastic "ultralight" bottles, and stainless steel bottles... not to mention, they come in a couple sizes, some having different thicknesses and a few different cap options...
I'm going to try this with my Kleen Kanteen this weekend. Sounds interesting. Going to wrap it in my seal skin waterproof socks and hopefully have warm water to wash my hands and face off with first thing in the morning.
I like how this makes it possible to extend the range of your quilt by at least 10 degrees. I can get by with fewer quilts and save money in the process.
Some of the knock offs will leak with the hot water, the nalene brand tends to be the better ones for doing this. If you have a different brand, definatley test it before throwing it in your hammock......RR

Evernew Water carry bags work well. i made some friend winter camping recently when i put this in their bags. The evernew has an excellent screw cap unlike the platypus caps. The caps are also attached semi permanent like nalgene bottles.
Just got back from a 3 day, 2 night kayak camping trip on the Au Sable river here in Michigan. Sadly, we were in a tent. I don't have a hammock yet. I was sleeping in a military modular sleep system, and I put boiling water in my Nalgene bottle both nights. The first night was in the teens. I was toasty. The second night I used the Nalgene and a Gatorade bottle. It was forecast to get to -9 F that night. It was -4 at 8:00 the next morning. I don't know how cold it got, but I suspect much colder than -9. The gortex bivy covers on the bags were frozen solid in the morning.
I would have been way too cold without the bottles. HUGE difference. Very glad I saw this thread before I went. Also - the gatorade bottle was filled with hot (not quite boiling) water. It deformed a little, but I made sure it still sealed before I put it in my bag. Might have been just lucky. I wouldn't bet on it as my only option.
