I've only done this once earlier this year in Feb or March winter camping. The average high for the day was 19° F, probably around 0° at night. I did make one slight change to the plain 'ol hot water in the Nalgene though. I added a half pack of Jello. It was amazing! I drank some hot Jello before I went to bed, then tossed the bottle back in the bag. In the morning it was cold, but I got to eat Jello for Breakfast! I'd imagine it'd be easier to eat if you had a soft sided container, you could just squeeze it out! Granted I'd never do it during the spring, summer or fall due to the much higher probability of dealing with a bear.

Having done this a few times (hard nalgene bottle, in my foot box since I have a 3/4UQ), one of the best parts is having non-frozen water to cook breakfast with when you wake up without having to go to the local water source.

I love the jello idea! Not a huge fan of jello, but the fore thought is excellent!

this past weekend i made hot water bottles out of the ozarka 20oz bottled water. brought the water to a boil and poured it back in the bottle. quickly found out that the boiling water causes the plastic water bottle to shrink to about 3/4 the size of its original size. luckily i didnt top the bottles off and the tops were still water tight. from now on, i think i will use my nalgene or stainless bottles just in case

Re: Using A Hot Water Bottle To Stay Warm

It works with out question... just a big warning if you use stainless steel bottles make sure you insulate them and make sure it doesn't come off, would be a rough burn, and a lousy remainder to a trip

    +1

This is what I used (see pic) last Friday night. Put boiling water in about 9 and it was hot til about 3 am, when I started drinking nice warm water. The fleece cover keeps it nice and warm a lot longer and keeps me from getting burned when it touches my hands.
