I keep my wool sleeping socks stored in the gear closet with a nalgene inside them to keep them loose fitting.

    Coatsleeve Cozy

FWIW, took an old winter coat sleeve that has the zippers to adjust the cuff, cut it off to nalgene length, sewed a bottom. Nice cozy.

South Florida would hopefully never get cold enough for me to need to do this but it's great to keep in mind when I head up to colder weather in GA and NC. Thanks so much for sharing.

Would any hard plastic bottle work? Can a stainless steel water bottle be used?

Camelbak, Nalgene, or similar thick bottle works. I would say a steel one would work as well. Others may have to vouch on that one as I've never tried it.

    Thumbs up

I use the metal clean canteen. Wal-mart has insulated sleeves for various size water bottles I have found to be just right.

Does anyone know if you could do this with something like a collapsible Platypus container or similar? I usually don't carry a Nalgene bottle.

Yeah. Make sure you check if the plastic can handle higher temperatures. Usually dishwasher safe materials are fine. I put my hot water into my geigerrig and cover it with a shirt. If I put it between my legs it stays warmer a little longer.

I'm using a Kleen Kanteen with the metal cap. On my last trip I was carrying it by the loop and it pulled off dropping the bottle on the ground. The threaded metal part stayed in place and it didn't leak but the O ring looked like it was rolling away from the seal seat. I unscrewed the metal part, put the O ring on, and snapped the plastic loop back on. I still slept with it with no problems, but I'm more careful with how I handle it and don't stress the loop unnecessarily.
