What NOT to do!
Had a backyard campout with our neighbors the other day. I wanted to make sure all the ground dwellers would be comfy so I told them about the Nalgene hot bottle idea. In the process I handed out all 4 of my Nalgene bottles.
I was the last one up and at least 10 beers in at this point and decided I should check the house for another bottle. I spotted a cheap Walmart water bottle and thought, hey, a bottles a bottle. So I fire up the JetBoil one more time and fill up my new bottle and toss it on my hammock. About 20 min later I decide to call it a night and plop down into 32 ounces of really hot water!
The cheap bottle had melted and not only soaked my sleeping clothes, but my hammock, UQ and TQ. I couldn't be the only one that gave up and slept inside so I dried everything the best I could and changed clothes, but it was a chilly and miserable 20* night!!
just ordered 0.75 L Source collapsible bottle. ("Liquitainer").
http://www.amazon.com/Source-Outdoor...QSH00F7PCR53V9
they advertised it for boiling water . (100 deg. cel.)
at home i use a kind of electric hot water bottle, that you plug for a few minutes. when it reachs about 60 deg. cel., it stop charging, and then i unplug it and put it in the hammock. its stay warm a bit longer than a water bottle, (whole night) and also you can heat it while staying in the hammock, as long as you have electric outlet within reach. (indoors).

got the 0.75 L Source collapsible bottle. ("Liquitainer").
it looks more durable than my platypus soft bottle, and more stable.
haven't tried it yet with hot water though.
plan to do a few trails at home before i hug it in the woods.
they say in the web to put a little cool water, and then add the boiling water.
it's probably a good idea, to extend its life.

I Finally read thru the hundreds of posts on this thread. I especially enjoyed the reports of success and failures with many types and brands of water containers, methods, placement etc. As with most long running, sticky threads i was a little frustrated by the questions on topics that had already been covered over and over by folks who apparently do not know how to search a forum. (A basic skill that about a billion elementary school children all over the world have mastered.) Here is one method using either Google or Bing that should work with other search engines as well:
bing.com site:hammockforums.net+thread:Using A Hot Water Bottle To Stay Warm nalgene cantene
Should still find topics that are misspelled slightly, change thread to whatever and key word(s) to "pee bottle" or whatever you are looking for such as "spill" or another brand name, unlimited variations.
If, for example, your are volunteering in a remote part of North Africa with an NGO and need to search the internet, just stop by a mud and stick hut with solar panels and ask a barefoot child to help you lookup on the internet how to boil water over camel or goat dung in a paper cup or disposable plastic bottle, then transfer it to your Nalgene and you will sleep better as the desert air cools down after dark. This is also a good method to sterilize water if you need to deliver a baby and then maintain its body temperature. Some friends once had to deal with a rejected female newborn in the Amazon Jungle, the Mom laid her in the dirt beside her hammock and ignored the baby's cries. Always good to know how to boil water with whatever, clean up baby and keep it warm, HWB. I helped my dad introduce cattle and water buffalo for such issues (fresh milk). I know this is not a survivalist forum but just some fun facts, ya never know. Travel far and have fun.
