i started using my new 0.75 L Source collapsible bottle. ("Liquitainer").
    http://www.amazon.com/Source-Outdoor...QSH00F7PCR53V9
as a water bottle and a hot bottle.
my impression so far is good.
takes few trails to get comfortable with filling it up, but its an interesting design, (more ''sophisticated'' than the platy) and seems solid, and holds hot water well.
i do add the boiling water after putting a little bit of cool water, just in case, and to hopefully extend its life.

Did this last night with liter nalgenes for both my son and I.

It was around 40-42, and it certainly helped us UQ-less noobs.

    hot water, and hot rocks

as i don't carry any quilt, i use here both hot water, in my source blue collapsible bottle, as well as hot rocks, which i heated on top of this make shift stove.
in the middle of the night, i reheated more rocks.
i use my car windshield reflector, not just as a sleeping pad, but also as a camp fire heat reflector, as well, as a hammock heat protector, from the stove. the stoves door was poorly designed by me, but the stove proved itself safe to sleep by.

This winter i used it in a 32 degree bag while ground camping (i know) and it kept me plenty warm to fall asleep, when i woke up at 4 am with a cold bag i wasnt nearly as happy lol, in retrospect i shoulda reboiled it and went back to bed lol.

I’ve taken note of this for the next time me and the boys go out camping. Sounds like it’s a great idea.

Like the old climber trick of peeing into a bottle and keeping it in your sleeping bag afterwards.

I do three things like this. Hot water bottle, pee bottle, and sometimes a decent flat rock from the fire cooled enough to wrap in my sweat rag and put in a stuff sack. The rock either goes between my legs to heat those arteries or under the small of my back and it feels so so good.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.

Not if you are using genuine Nalgene Bottles. The clone bottles can't take the heat of boiling water. Warm water yes, not boiling.

I was camping recently and used a reuseable heat pack very similar to this one: http://www.amazon.com/3secondheat-In.../dp/B005GYLI8S

You have to boil it to reuse, I happened to be camping at a place where I was working in a kitchen and could boil them as I pleased. Might be useful for a one night trip, or you can bring multiple. Maybe not for backpacking, they can get heavy.
