Used the hot Nalgene trick this past February, temps dropped to 7 degrees Fahrenheit with crazy winds. I thought the trees were gonna kill me as they were cracking from the wind/frozen core, but my "tender area" stayed warm with the bottle between my legs.

They work great for me, careful though, they can be a super hot. I fell asleep with mine too close to my skin, and I woke up first-degree burns, almost on the cusp of second. I now wrap mine in a micro fiber cloth. Works wonders, just keep it close to your core and the heart will pump the warm blood to the rest of your body. They are kind of creepy when you click that metal piece in them, to watch the chemical reaction turning the liquid inside them turn to a solid.

Anyhoo let me know how they work for you!

Great thread, tons of good advice and I cant believe I read the whole thing! I was wondering about leaving a warm bottle in the hammock, with batteries, fuel canisters, etc, to keep them warm while exploring during the day? Would this just be a waste of time/fuel/resources or worth the little extra time? I was thinking if you wrapped them up in like a fleece or covered just with a TQ to insulate? Your thoughts?

That's a great idea. Got to keep those batteries warm.

Overnight, I put my iphone, external battery pack, headlamp, contacts/solution, and canister fuel in my tarp stuff sack. I keep this stuff sack under my TQ, usually just against my torso. Everything stays nice a warm.

Batteries, I don't think it matters so much. At least Li-Ions, which are good to store in the cold but not during use. You will notice this in the cold with your phone. If you go to bed with it at 80%, and wake up after it being cold all night, it may say something like 30%, but once it warms up you will see it jump rapidly close to 80% again. But, I still sleep with mine for good measure.

For day hikes like you mention, if you're not taking stuff with you I don't think it would be a waste of fuel if it's really cold. Actually, I need to remember this for my contacts and contact solution - not something I want to carry in a pocket all day. Plus, if you keep it in your TQ or sleeping bag, the warm may help dissapate any dampness (I think...right?)

What is the Nalgene trick exactly? Is it just putting warm water in the bottle or is it more than that?

I just did this last night, got down to 36f or so. Worked great, I was almost too warm, had to shed layers to cool off

Might be talking about hand warmers. I don't bring my water to a full boil before I put it in the nalgene. It's nice to put the hot bottle in the hammock a little before bed so you get into a nice toasty hammock.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!
