The cloudy colored Nalgene bottles flex enough that while the bottle collapsed a little as it cooled, I didn’t have any issues with opening it due to the vacuum. So it might depend on the water container you’re using.

HDPE bottles, the best! Only $5 and a higher max temp rating (but 212° is plenty with the others IMO). But I do like some wiggle room.

I also like to leave a 1" gap so when I loosen it right after filling and capping (good practice to release that initial pressure), it doensn't spray all over. You'll learn and only make that mistake ONCE!

I've yet to try this. Definitely going to have to give this a shot.

Another perk of doing this in sub-freezing temperatures is that when you wake up, you actually have water that is not frozen solid to make coffee with

(not sure if this was mentioned somewhere else in the 80 pages of posts

I'm sure it was. It's a nice bonus aside from staying warm. Even if the water cools to 75°, it beats 35°. Save time, fuel and the grumpy face from having to wait for coffee.

I did it a few weeks ago on a night that got down to 0*F. I got the water just shy of boiling and put it in the opaque Nalgene bottle, then inside a double layer DIY reflective cozie. It still put off plenty of warmth from 7pm until 6:30am, and was well above 100 when I started water for coffee. This was the first time I had even tried the trick, definitely a great idea.

Anyone see any harm in using the single wall ss Nalgene bottle to heat the water in and using it instead of needing to transfer the water from a pot to the bottle?

Ive found a reflectix coozie works amazingly well. Enough heat still escapes that it keeps you warm, but the heat loss is much slower and lasts the entire night. An extra bonus is it doesn’t take nearly as much fuel to reheat for coffee in the morning.
