Saving grace this past weekend. 15 degrees during a weekend long SAR training in NC. Ran my WBBB with diy synthetic UQ and my 15degree down sleeping bag. The hot water bottle was the only thing that allowed me to make it through the night with any comfort.

MidTNJohn... doubt most people these days remember those. Shudder to think what it would do to ripstop!

Thunderchild - check out the GSI Glacier Tea Kettle. I've used it for boiling and pan frying, pours well, cleans up well, inexpensive.

I know another hammocker who swears by wool socks over the Nalg. Winter hanging I use 1-4 of the hard plastic 1qt Nalgenes in double layer of Reflectix cozies. Roughly one Nalg in 20s F, two in teens, etc. YMMV. Bring water to rolling boil, let sit a minute or so off the heat so it settles down (I have seen Nalgs deform from the heat but IIRC they were off brand), pour into Nalgenes... still giving off heat 7+ hours later.

I learned about this idea last week at the Stokes State Forest hang. Wish I had seen this thread before then, but my hanging buddies found an extra bottle for me.

Good idea. If you're carrying a stove and you have space in your bag for the hot water bottle, I don't see why it wouldn't work well. For ultralight campers, I've been using Handwarmer pads to keep warm. They're tiny, weigh nothing and pack enough heat to keep you cosy all night long. These are the ones I use: http://www.theheatcompany.com/de/waermepads/handwaermer

Epic trip and an entertaining video. I can't believe your ground-dwelling mate curled up under that make shift tent and actually got some decent sleep. Too extreme for me!

I melt snow in a thin SS water bottle using the evening fire to bring it almost to a boil. Then insulate the bottle with a spare sock.
This method ads zero weight to my kit and my days supply of water is lukewarm and ready for use that day.
I have been know to take both water bottles into the hammock with me. One for my feet and one between the legs.

Wow. That's an awesome idea, OutandBack. I might have to try this myself on the next snowy adventure!
