My Dad used to have one of these. He stopped bringing it with him hunting cause it really had a strong smell. But very warm, he had a pouch that it went in cause it was too hot for bare shands.

Putting some hot water into an empty Camelback bag is also good - covers more area, and is moldable to wherever you want it.

    The Amazing shrinking bottle!

We were out this weekend at the Heart of Dixie Hang, and on Saturday night, I boiled water for me and another for my son. I had a name brand Nalgene, while Smarticle had one from Academy. The just as the water came to a boil I poured it into his Academy bottle, and I started up some more for MandyDawn's tea. In a very startled and concerned voice, Smarticle said, "Hey look at this!" The bottle had started to collapse at the bottom--melted! I could tell that it was beginning to compress the air in the bottle, and concerned that it may explode, I carefully loosened the lid, well aware that it filled with water over 200º. It spurt out a little, and I closed the lid. Well, it just kept shrinking, and shrinking and shrinking!

By the time it was done, it had shrunk to less than 1/2 it's old size. The 32 oz mark now holds 14 oz of water. And yet somehow, the lid did not shrink and the mouth maintained its size and shape, and still maintains a good seal.

Has anyone ever seen this happen before.

And before you say "Pics or it didn't happen," here it is. Oh, yea, bigbamaguy, MandyDawn, Goblin, bdbart, and aboyd were all witnesses.

    Buffalo Skipper,
That is amazing! And also why I only use Nalgenes where hot water is in play. I have had off brands leak, although that can often be solved with Saran Wrap over the mouth (under the cap).

    Thanks for showing us that.

What was amazing was watching it happen before our eyes! We all agreed that using Nalgene brand products was very important to all of us in the future....

Video or it didn't happen the way you said it did... Just kidding...

I've seen it with other cheaper bottles, like water or pop, even did it with a milk jug once. Usually the end/threads stays intact. It's thicker plastic there and the cap doesn't shrink because it's different thicker plastic.

Filled to within a ½" or so. Initially, the bottom collapsed under its own weight. I gently eased out some water (which wanted to spray out under the pressure). I wonder now if I had let out more water if it would have shrunk smaller....

I was there and watched the whole thing happen...........I have never seen one of these bottles do this before........think about what was happening, hot water was placed into a supposed safe container that is rated for this application. If anything the bottle should have expanded not shrunk in size...........or does Academy have their "nalgene" bottles made from heat shrink tubing????????
