You can always pop a warm nalgene in your boots in the morning before getting up, as well. I hate cold boots.

Definitely want to be careful (i.e., imo avoid) sleeping with a Zippo Hand Warmer, for both of the reasons you mention -- possible fumes and the fact that, no matter how safe the temp may feel before you go to sleep, the flow of oxygen to the burner can increase as you shift around and expose more of it. The increase in oxygen flow to the burner makes it get hotter.
I'm going to add your cautionary tale to my in-depth review (it really is, if I say so myself) of the Zippo Hand Warmer at http://outdoorgearandtravel.com/?p=2904
I confess I did not read through all 12 pages, so someone has probably already mentioned it...
I recently was trying to figure out a way to dry socks that had gotten soaked in the rain. It was too cold to let my feet do the drying. So I put boiling water in my water bottles and then put them in the socks. It did not take long for the socks to mostly dry, to the point that my feet could finish the job in my quilt.

Just picked-up two 16 oz Nalgenes to use exclusively for warming in the hammock/bag/under quilt. We'll see how they work. I was okay down to about 22* at the New Jersey Hang last year without them, but it is expected to get down to 12* or so for the NEHHA in two weeks. News at 11:00. Well, after the hang!

Also a great way to heat up your boots in the morning. That's why I got the 16 oz bottles. They also fit easily into boots.

That was a long thread 39 pages...how far can it go?
I will now be using my Nalgene Stainless by Guyot Designs because I have DCFS (darn cold feet syndrone).
Hmmm, I only have 8 pages, but I have 50 post per page.
Great info, I bought 3 of the nalgene canteens, two for this use, 32oz and 48oz. Still haven't tried it, but think I'll have the chance shortly......RR
