I have double layer hammocks so I can use a pad, and I often do, but a nice underquilt is very comfortable and allows the hammock to lay normally. There are good threads about the pros and cons of each, but most people who invest in a quilt don't seem to look back. You might check out Just Jeff's Hiking Page, www.tothewoods.net, and look at the pages on hammock camping and staying warm. Lots of other good info too if you haven't checked it out already.

That's the thing! It wasn't the reason I got into hammocks, but comfort quickly became my priority with hammocks. Pads work, underquilts perform. You feel warm with an underquilt in a way you don't with pads and the hammock feels more natural since there is no rigidity from the pad.

Do you need an underquilt? Not as long as you've never used one. Once an underquilt is used, the vast majority start looking at underquilts instead of pads. Like the man said, "Underquilts are all that."

I think everyone's different, I can't use the standard ccf pad I have from halfords as my shoulders are too broad, I wasnt willing to buy a wider pad when I could get an uq (snugpak one) for not much more than a quality wide pad. Will be upgrading to a better one (down) when I have some more £. But hyoh!

Edit: to was spelled 'too' oops, back to school.

I've bought Bubble Pad to go with my Hennessy but don't get it 'til Christmas.
I have been looking at the Snugpak over quilt, but struggling to convince myself I really need one.

Not at all......Come on up to the Minn Frozen Butt. Most of us just hang in speedo's and Hawiian shirts, Using cotton sheets as top quilts if we need one. It's all about tolerance....................

Our record cold temp in the U.K is -27C (-16F). We normally don't get any colder than -10C (14) up in Scotland. Our frozen butt hang would be an autumn (mild butt) hang for you guys!
Don't you mean down? I find it strange that you guys have a lower latitude than us and have such low temps.

Do you need an UQ? Short Answer is no. You can use other means of insulation. I slept just fine in my hammock on a 40*F night in just my sleeping bag and a bag liner. You can use pads and other items to various degrees of success. Shug has a great video series on Hammock camping if you haven't checked out his Youtube channel you should. He is a very entertaining and informative character. Would love to meet him in person some time. One of the video's he did in his noob series covers this topic. Here is where he did a revisit on UQ's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9N3KkV5Zf4

After careful consideration, I am saving my money to get a quality 20*F down UQ. Between now and then, I"m going to get a cheap 20*F bag from Wally World and convert it to a UQ I can use. Those are just my thoughts though.

Lower latitude maybe, but your highest elevation point is still almost 1,000' (300+ meters) below me and a good 2,000 - 3,000' lower than the areas I generally hike in. So, there's that.
