I use an SPE like the one in Shug's picture, but two pieces of Walmart blue pad in a cross pattern, (one piece layed across the other to protect shoulders) will work just fine.

Welcome from Greenfield Indiana. I just started hanging this month and have gotten down to the mid 20s with two pads crossed to mostly cover my shoulders and tapering down to meet at my feet, with a regular mummy sleeping bag. Stayed fairly comfortable. Using a tarp to break the wind also helps along with some warm sleeping clothes and headwear.
