We'll need to know a bit more about the situation. What is the fabric weight (for example 1.1oz Ripstop or 2.2 Crinkle Taffeta)? How much do you weigh? Are the fibers spreading at the seams or in the middle?

I'm sure we'll figure this out.

It works out to be about 1.8 ripstop nylon. It's just a very small area in the middle of the hammock

Well, it's not at all common. You may have a defective piece of fabric. Can you take a picture of it?

It's potentially a point of failure.

Pics would definitely help, is the weight listed per m2 or per linear m?

And how much do you weigh?

Where are the fibers spreading? At the seams? Randomly in the middle?

Do the fibers spread every time you get in or out of the hammock?

    Can you post any pictures?

This does not seem to be a common issue. I've had a hammock pile under me when I was wearing shorts with velcro on the backside (I didn't think about the velcro until I'd gotten in).
