It works out to be about 1.8 ripstop nylon. It's just a very small area in the middle of the hammock
Well, it's not at all common. You may have a defective piece of fabric. Can you take a picture of it?
It's potentially a point of failure.

Where are the fibers spreading? At the seams? Randomly in the middle?
Do the fibers spread every time you get in or out of the hammock?

This does not seem to be a common issue. I've had a hammock pile under me when I was wearing shorts with velcro on the backside (I didn't think about the velcro until I'd gotten in).
