hey everyone i just wanted to get some feedback on what i plan on using for an upcoming hang in Feb. wanted to make sure if everyone thought this would be enought to keep me warm....and yes i am a cold sleeper.
DIY UQ - good till about 40*
CC Foam pad
Under Armor tops and bottoms
snow pants
parka style jacket with liner
regular thermals

Its a good start but for me, I would be cold most likely. The pad and UQ though should add up nicely. If still stuck, you could always add a sock or some reflectix inside your UQ or on the pad and thats a relatively cheap help.

theres the rub, the quality here is questionable... what are the brands and are you hiking to this hang? Last Saturday at 29 degrees I had a 40 degree mummy bag, a Stormcrow Underquilt a LL Bean Down Jacket, Under Armor top, 200weight fleece mittens and hat... and here's a little TMI the hat rolls down past my face protecting my nose from frostbite. Here and there I got a chill but I was comfortable... Rugby my dog... not so much.
The secret is that the more air you trap as close you your skin the more comfort you will have. In survival people trap tons of warmth by making huge piles of leaves and climbing under them... Think five times bigger than your best picture in your mind.
I have a better idea - Its 40 degrees right now in our backyards. go get a reclining deck chair and set it up right now and sleep outside in the above mentioned gear... when it gets too cold - go back to bed. If you make it thru the night - you have the right gear - if not - better come up with better gear. Easy!

Isn't it going to be pretty cold in Feb, in PA? Maybe well below zero? Do you not have a bag or TQ? Just a Parka and snow pants? And you are a cold sleeper? I think you might freeze unless you are traveling to FL for that trip.
The CCF pad, how thick? If thick enough, it will take you plenty low, with or without the 40F UQ. A pad could be used with that UQ to below zero, if it does not interfere with the fit of the UQ.

Is your outerwear breathable? If you are hiking do you sweat a lot? What kind of weather protection are you going to be using? Big tarp with doors for example? As the weather gets colder, do some at home testing for sure. Best way to figure things out.

How thick is your pad? What kind of low temps would u expect?
If you haven't actually used that "20*" bag at 20* or whatever you'll be out at, test it out beforehand! A lot of bags tell you the temp you won't necessarily die at not the temp you'll be comfortable actually sleeping at.Originally Posted by grich9860

Bottom you're probably fine with, maybe make yourself a SPE or just get another partial pad and do a T with it to give you a bit of extra shoulder coverage.

i have had the bag down to 30* and was comfortable while sleeping on the ground with a 1/2 inch wally world blue pad. this is the pad that i intend to use for the hang. i am going to add the T portion to the pad before i go. i am guessing that the lows that time of year will range from 20* - 0*. i am going to be doing some test hangs in the backyard to see where everything stands and if i need to add more i can always add more!!
