    My DIY Hammock Sock

Here's my take on a hammock sock. After much thought and examination of all the different versions out there (Just Jeff, Warbonnet, MacEntyre, Sgt Rock), I decided to do one with a zipper. The design was heavily influenced by the Warbonnet Traveler bugnet, very simple and straightforward. The next one I'll make with a flap/SEEP like a TED bugnet, just so it's more kid-friendly.

Constructions details: 1.5 oz ripstop, #3 coil zipper. Length is 114" for a 110" hammock ridgeline. Shape is a semicircle.

The end of the video shows how I laid out the radius on the fabric. I did the zipper line the same way with a shorter radius.

It still needs to be thoroughly field tested, but it does keep the wind off which was my primary reason for building it.

    That's one professional looking sock!
It just might be worth the weight of the zipper to have one that nice. And I love your ultra-simple way of attaching the whoopie to the mitten hook!

Now, lets talk about how jealous I am of your lay-out table!!!

That layout table has saved my knees on many occassions. Now I store stuff in other rooms so I can use my table in the storeroom.

Very nice looking. Liked the mitten/whoopie stuff and also the way you drew your semi circle. What a great table. I don't have a table that big in my woodworking shop.

+1 on the table envy! I would love to have a guaranteed flat surface that big to work on! Great job on the sock, Detail Man. What material did you use? Do you have a weight on it? Again, your mad DIY skills impress.

Thanks everyone. Fabric was some 1.5 oz ripstop I picked up at Phoenix of Anderson. The weight came out around 12 oz.

That is one very nice sock, and seems like a sock and a slug tube all in one. Looks like a future project for me, but I know mine wouldn't look half as nice.

Thanks. It does work as a slug tube. On the Big South Fork hang a couple weeks ago, I just left my quilts, hammock, and sleep clothes all in the sock. Made stuffing the monstrosity in the pack feel like I was wrestling a giant slug, but setup/take down was easy and quick.

You can do it. Just take your time. Start off right, and you'll end up right. The hardest part was the zipper on the curve. Lots and lots of pins. Getting the length right is important: Hammock ridgeline length + 4".
