Most folks on the forum recommend a 5 to 1 safety ratio, so using that guideline your knotted Amsteel should only be used for someone weighing 160 lbs. or less, while 1/8" Amsteel should not be used by anyone over 250 lbs.

Bottom line: The manufacturer, Samson Rope, recommends a splice as the best way to maintain Amsteel's strength, so you're ignoring the manufacturer's recommendation at your own risk.
I'm using the 1/8th inch and the pictures will explain what I've been doing a lot better. That said, the knots at either end of the suspension line bear very little load. Think triple (or even quad) pulley block and tackle. Given the load rating for my hammock (ENO DN) is only 400 lbs. I'm confident that it will fail long before my suspension.
If it's stupid but works, it isn't stupid.

If I'm making something like a whoopie sling, free ends get back splice or an eye splice.

If I use a double fisherman's knot to make a continuous loop or a diamond knot with short tails, I just let it fuzz.

Rob...splicing 1/8" amsteel is easy...you'll be happy you learned.

Do you use double fisherman's knots to make continuous loops in amsteel blue? (Sorry to drift away from the original poster's topic but I'm curious.) Like Silversurfer, I'd be afraid of degrading the strength of the line.

Gresh: You're right. I forgot, but Mr. Pips (former electronics technician in the U.S. Coast Guard) always uses a hair dryer on heat shrink. Thanks for the reminder!

Certainly. One thing to keep in mind is that using a continuous loop doubles the rope. The weigh is split between the two sides and the knot is only exposed to half the force if you position it to the side.

Try using a Hair Dryer on the high heat setting. It will take a little longer than a heat gun, or your lighter, but you don't run the risk of burning anything and I would expect you'd avoid the black sooty stuff.

Just in time!! Just got in my mailbox 90 feet of 7/64th amsteel blue for whoopies and continuous loops. I'm sure double fisherman's knots use a lot less line than buries for the continuous loops! Thanks again, G!

A bit less, but I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor. Tie a few and splice a few. It's all good fun and games.

Since I'll have to go and buy either, I guess I'd get a heat gun as I would have no other use for a hair dryer (not enough hair). Personally, the sooty color doesn't bother me.

Encouraging an addiction ya know. Once you start splicing you can't go back.
