I used a lighter as the heat source since I don't have a hot air gun. The white didn't stay white for long despite trying to be really careful and waving it through the flame. Also, I was used pieces that were about 1/2 an inch long so there wasn't much room to write once it shrunk.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. Heat shrink always gets an ugly sooty stain on it when you shrink it. I'm sure it's very apparent on the white. Maybe try clear heat shrink? I just melt my amsteel ends. HYOH!!!

Try holding it beside the flame instead of over it.

Pips, all I got when I tried to melt the ends was a ball of hot gooey mess that looked terrible and didn't seem to hold together very well but that was using a match, not doing it correctly with a hot knife (which I don't have).

If you're not splicing Amsteel, then what are you doing with it, tying knots?

Yes, and they seem to hold quite well given the difficulty I had untying them after being under a load. Currently there are only 4 in the system, 2 double water knots in the loops at either end of the hammock and one at either end where my SLS secures to the tree straps. So far no problems despite how "slippery" Amsteel is. Next setup I'll take some detailed photos and post them. Pictures being worth 1000 words and all, seeing will be more understandable than reading.

I hope you're not a big fella. Knots severely reduce the rope's breaking strength by up to 50 percent. So your 7/64 Amsteel's breaking strength goes from 1600 to 800 lbs., less than Dynaglide, while your 1/8" Amsteel goes from 2500 lbs. to 1,250 lbs.

Most folks on the forum recommend a 5 to 1 safety ratio, so using that guideline your knotted Amsteel should only be used for someone weighing 160 lbs. or less, while 1/8" Amsteel should not be used by anyone over 250 lbs.

Bottom line: The manufacturer, Samson Rope, recommends a splice as the best way to maintain Amsteel's strength, so you're ignoring the manufacturer's recommendation at your own risk.

Try not using flame, but a heat gun or hair dryer.
