15 Continuous Hours in a Hammock

Backpacked into the Birkhead Wilderness Friday and Saturday for a short break. Because I was so tired from the drive and hike in, I didn't build a campfire Fri night. I crashed at 5 Pm, took my bathroom breaks from the Ridgerunner, and my feet didn't hit the ground again until 8:15Am. I never felt better, no pain in my neck, back, knees, nowhere! It made hiking Saturday a breeze.

Saturday night I did build a fire because the nearest towns low was 23 deg. and I figure it was in the teens way out in the bush. For insulation an Army ccf combined with ww ccf and space blanket. On top was a 0 deg. Eddie Bauer bag, it's as heavy as a Buick but did the job. I got chilled about 3 Am from the top and cracked 2 chem hand warmers and I spent the rest of the night in bliss. The bottom was always warm, a little bit clammy maybe from condensation, but very warm and fine.

I wish I would have read the sticky on hot water bottles, that would have been better, I'll try that next time. This forum is a gold mine of info, I'll try to pay it back with pics next time I'm out there.

So you didn't have an UQ?

Do you have any other hammocks to compare with the RidgeRunner? I was wondering if you found it easier to stay warm in your RR compared to a gathered end.

Could you provide an illustration of that? I mean, nothing Dejoha quality but I'm just curious. I usually stumble over to one of the trees.

1 do a lot of 12 hr plus in my hammocks when I solo!

Priller, I don't have an UQ and probably won't get one. I have a WL snipe but have never used a pad in it, its for summer in the backyard mainly. As for the RR, those 2 pads provide for a very flat, warm lay, like a cot. And because I use a bag and not an OQ, the bottom of the bag, because its so fluffy, is like laying on memory foam.

Caveman, I will definitely start with the pics next trip. I'm finally retiring, and will have a lot of time for both trips and this forum.

Birkhead - Dang. Me and a Pard went to Uwharrie last weekend. He had to take off Sat PM so I soloed it that night.

Yes, it was cold early Sunday AM. Had about 1 inch of water in one of my water bottles and most of it was frozen when I got up to make coffee.

First time I got to try out my Jacks R Better HR UQ and Kat TQ. Way too warm when I went to bed but from midnight to dawn it felt real nice.

I missed the Yates Place Hand but some of us us NC folks have to get together back in Uwharrie sometime in Jan.
