    Congaree National Park?

Has anyone camped at Congaree National Park before? I'm thinking of staying there a couple nights later this week...so, any info would be greatly appreciated! I found the website with some information, but am curious if there is car camping or if it's all hike in?...is there potable water available?...etc. Thanks!

By the way, I'm looking at staying Wednesday and Thursday nights...or something like that. I know the chances are slim with Thanksgiving being Thursday, but anyone is interested in joining me, you'd be welcome.

I have camped there a couple times. It is FREE to camp, you just have to go to the office and get the campsite tag. You can camp ANYWHERE in the park, but if you want a campfire i think you will have to camp at one of the established campgrounds, there are 2 of them. One is OUTSIDE the front gate, has a parking area, port-a-potty, trash recepticles and multiple campsites with fire rings. Several good trees to hang from. The other one is about a mile from the outside parking area and you have to hike in to it. It has multiple fire rings and a trash recipticle but NO port-a-potty so i think you will have to take a shovel There are restrooms, water and soda machines at the office, but i am not sure if the restrooms are open after hours.

I've not camped there, but I'm curious how it is.. if you go, be sure to report back.

Oh, and I came across this thread.. seems like the Congaree would be perfect for hanging over water.

Did a trip there a couple of years ago. We canoed in and did a 3 day base camp and hiked different parts of the park. A very interesting place. The water is absolutely terrible. I recommend taking your water as the water running through the park is very acidic and stained in color. Extra long tree straps are a must or you may find yourself in an area where the trees are just too large to fit your normal straps around. There's also no shortage of wild pigs and as you will see, the land has paid a toll. Call ahead to the park for water levels as the elevation change over the entire park is only 10' and is all susceptible to flooding and does often.

All in all it is a great place to check out. The only flood plain bottom land of it's kind left in the US with many record trees.

I stayed there last year at the camp sites to the left as ya go in. All primative, but there is a bathroom at the office. The best part was the daily rate... FREE.
