Question DIY hammock fabric help please

    Heya all,
I am about to order all I need from DIY supply gear to make a complete setup sans tarp. I am 6'1" and 180 pounds, will be using the hammock for hiking and I need some help regarding materials. I will be using a UQ so single layer seems the way to go and the polyester taffeta blanks look really tempting, but are they unnecessary weight? and whats the durability like?

Should I be looking at nylon 1.1? and if so is a single layer sufficient?
Is a double 1.1 a better choice for durability?
Sorry for all the questions, I have never gone camping in a hammock so this is all new to me.

The taffeta blanks are unnecessarily heavy for hiking with. For your weight 1.1 nylon will work fine. I would recommend doing a single layer since you won't be using pads and it will hold up just fine durability wise.

Just make sure before you head out to the piney woods with it that you give it a test run at home. Sure would suck to be several miles out and have your hammock fail or find out that is unbearably uncomfortable.

If you are sketchy about the durability of 1.1 you could also use 1.7 or 1.9. But really the 1.1 will hold you no problem. I've just started testing out and, others have been testing longer, a hammock made out of .69 nylon. I weigh 170 and my butt hasn't hit the ground so far.

I weigh about 200# and the sweet spot for me is 1.9 oz single layer. It stretches just enough not to feel hard but still supportive. Although, when I'm hiking many miles, I carry a 1.4 oz single layer hammock and still have an acceptable stretch.

As far as falling through a 1.1 oz hammock, you won't. And if you like a soft mattress at home, it may be your ideal hammock. The table cloth polyester hammocks have almost no stretch and feel hard to me, while others prefer that feeling.

As always, if you can get to a group hang, you can try all sorts of hammock configurations and make new friends too!

Thanks for the swift reply MAD777 and SwingingIt
U have just helped make my decision heaps easier. I will be getting the 1.4 if its available and if not will go the 1.1.

    Thanks again.

I am 210#, and my fav. Hammock is a single 1.1. Diygearsupply's o.d. green 1.1 2nds is great fabric for the money.

Thanks for input John its 1.1 for sure. I guess the weight should be pretty low for the finished product. What did your 1.1 weigh?
On a slightly different note, I am adding the integrated bugnet and are undecided about putting zippers on both sides or one?

    p.s. awesome website!!!

The advantage if NOT having an attached bugnet is that you can reach below you on both sides if the hammock and adjust your under quilt. If you instal a zipper on only one side, you can't access the other side to move the under quilt. I have a hammock like that and it's a pain. I would strongly recommend a zipper on BOTH sides.

Yep, and it also gives you the option of unzipping the net all the way and being netless when you want.
