The cord from the pull-outs to the poles, are they an elastic, fixed or adjustable? How did you figure the length, just a visual thing? I'm guessing that I could buy some stock material or possibly find broken arrows at a range near by?

Do you need a tarp ridgeline to use this technique?

AHE did the first pole mod using 48" carbon poles on the outside of the tarp and so I just went with the 48" length and it worked perfect. I use 1/8 shock chord on the tie out rings for the tension. You could use smaller like 3/32 if you wanted. Basically was just playing with extra arrows and pieces I had laying around and put this together to work and its lite and easy. Works like a charm.

I'm assuming you mean a continuous ridgeline.

I can't see a reason why you couldn't use it on a tarp that doesn't have a CRL.

Yes I meant a CRL, thanks. I thought maybe having a cord underneath might make a difference in providing support for the poles.

Put 1.75mm Zing-it cords on a OES 10x10 I just bought and am going to try out Tendertoe's idea along with a CRL and some Dutchware products. This is going to rock! Thanks for the idea

Hey, Oms, you're going to like this system. I've used it on several trips now and it works very well.

I'm hoping to get out for an overnighter with a group around Rockford Il, so I'll post some pictures. On this tarp I also have the CRL on top because it has a center tie-out. Are there any concerns about the cross pole rubbing on the tarp if the CRL is underneath?

I use mine with the CRL underneath the tarp. Haven't noticed any premature wear.

You could just as easily use the poles over the CRL if you're running your CRL over the tarp.

I probably wouldn't be inclined to use the poles in this setup if there were high winds expected. The nice thing is that if you make the lines long enough, you can very easily go back to the standard way with the hiking pole staked out to the side. That way, you get some lateral support on the panel for the wind load. I did that at Mt. Rogers and it worked fine (even though I wasn't working fine )
