Hiker Pole Side Pullout for Tarp

I did this for a simple overniter in high wind, rain, etc. It worked fantastic with my BMJ. Poles set to 130 and looped right at the ends.

I call it Castle Greyskull. In the pic the corners are not set right so there is draped material.

No excessive downward pressure from the poles onto the tarp ridge line. Only slightly more than weight on poles.

I'm really interested in trying this method but my biggest fear is that I will wake up to a pair of bent poles in the morning. Has anyone bent their poles after trying this out? How much tension should the lines have that are connecting the tie-out points to the ends of the poles? I currently use Helinox DL145 poles. Maybe I'm being a little too cautious...

By the way, I forgot to mention that I will be trying this on a Superfly with a continuous ridgeline. The continuous ridgeline will be over my tarp and the middle of my poles will be resting on top of the line.

I'd be very surprised if there would ever be enough force to bend your hiking poles. I would think the guy lines would get pulled up first.

I still use this setup with my WL Big Daddy .. Never had a problem .. I just wouldn't use it in snow .. It flattens out the RL .. Rain and high winds have never been a problem in this mode ..

Good to know Black Wolf. I don't think we'll get much snow this year in California so hopefully I don't run into any issues there. Can't wait to try this out!

Here's my hiking pole mod on the WB Superfly this past weekend:

You can see a slight bend in each pole from the tension of the tarp, but I haven't noticed any long-term effects on the poles.

Thanks for the pictures. Do you think it would help to add a prusick to the ridgeline to slide the poles through so they have less of a chance of sliding around? I think it would make setting it up a little more difficult.

Also, do you use fixed lines to attach your poles to the tarp or use Tendertoe's method with the prusicks?

I haven't noticed enough movement from the poles to warrant adding prussics to the RL at the pole intersections, but I haven't used this in super-windy conditions either.

As for the lines attaching the poles to the pull-outs, I made small zing-it whoopie slings. They're adjustable from about 5" to 12-15". This allows me to wrap the adjustable eye around the end of the pole a couple times and cinch it down til I get the right pitch.

I'm still tinkering with it, but it has worked great so far. If I come across any major drawbacks in different conditions, I'll post it here, but for now I love the dual use of the hiking poles (and not carefully packing those nano lite tent poles).
