I was wondering about hunting season. The Ocala NF site mentions the camping restrictions during it - but they're bloody coy about listing when it is!

Yeah...that's because the dates change every year. The National Forest Service aren't the folks who set that; that's the Florida Fish & Game Commission, if memory serves. So, the Forest Service just links to their page instead of trying to duplicate (and possibly screw up) the information. It's a pain...

Hidden Pond is one of the nicest campsites in the Ocala National Forest, plus its only a 3 mile hike on the FT with easy access to water, great views, and plenty of trees. No hunting allowed there, and fires are allowed, unless there is a fire ban due to weather conditions.
If your wife is going with you, I recommend Alexander Springs in Oclala National Forest for a couple of reasons.
The sites are clean and have a secluded feel to them. Especially the ones in loop B outside ring. While there are pads, there are no electric hookups for RV's. That means few RV's bother to camp there and there isn't much generator noise.
Clean bathrooms with showers and flushing toilets. Your wife will be grateful for this.
The overgrowth can make tree selection a little challenging at times. Timberrr and I camp there several times each year with friends that 'Glamp' by our standards and we always find a nice spot to hang from.
